Watford 0 : Queens Park Rangers 0 – 29th December 2013

Given the lack of action to describe from yesterday’s match, I thought I’d just throw some thoughts down in a random fashion.
1. It’s been nearly two months since my last visit to the Vic (the gruesome defeat by Leicester ) but I have missed the place and was really looking forward to this game. Of course, being with the Witch and The Big Man helped. Going to a footy match on your own just doesn’t cut it sometimes.
2. Steve McClaren referred to QPR as the best team in the Championship when Derby played them in November. If that was the case then, boy have they declined since. Despite “Arry” postulating about how good they were in the first half, QPR didn’t muster a single shot on goal and were restricted to mostly wayward shots from outside the area. And not playing a single striker and leaving Zamora and Johnson on the bench? What was that all about?
3. Despite Watford ’s two best attacking threats (Anya and Forestieri) being out injured, I thought it was a decent performance from the Hornets. Unbeaten in Beppe Sannino’s first three games as Head Coach is nothing to be sniffed at, especially given all the times they’ve been taken apart recently.
4. I think I finally lost patience with Diego Fabbrini yesterday. I’ve been impressed by his direct running at defences and have wanted to see him start a game up front all season. However, apart from a one-two with Deeney that led Watford ’s only shot on goal in the game, he didn’t achieve anything. He constantly lost possession, ploughed lone furrows and basically demonstrated why he’s not been in the side. Some wag gave him the sponsor’s man of the match award at the end of the game. Seriously?
5. Sannino has to be one of the sharpest dressed head coaches I’ve seen pitch side since er… Ian Holloway. He certainly seems passionate about things, he never stopped gesticulating and shouting from the technical area. Will be interesting to hear what he has to say for himself in post match interviews.
6. This was my first opportunity to see George Thorne in action. Zola’s third attempt at employing a holding midfielder this season. He’s certainly a big lad. A few good tackles, a few half decent short passes and plenty of misplaced passes and lost possession in dangerous areas. No thanks, I think I’d give Iriney another go.
7. I thought the atmosphere in the Rookery was pretty good for a nil-nil draw. I even found myself singing along to a few chants. That “Watford FC, Watford FC” one is quite catchy.
8. I’m not sure if I’m underestimating the ability of the construction company Watford have employed to build the new East Stand but I can’t see any of that being completed this season. They got rid of some of the rubble since November but that’s about it. Oh well, we’ll have to get seats at the front of the Rookery for the foreseeable future then..

One response to “Watford 0 : Queens Park Rangers 0 – 29th December 2013

  1. Lol Always a grand day with you & E when football comes to town 🙂

Decent musings on yesterday’s game.QPR didn’t have a striker available according to ‘arry, both Johnson & Zamora unfit but on the subs list.Watford had Forestieri & Anya injured.Sannino seemed to cope well with that.Hence my decision on Sean Murray being man of the match today.Lots of energy, not scared of a tackle or two & confidence to shoot.(I’m no wag)
Sean just pipped Lloyd Doyley, who again stuck to basics well defensively.

The game itself Wasnt a thriller but yes,us Hornets via 1881 Movement like a simple catchy chant.lol

The news that 2 Udinese players Ranegie & Merkel in the directors box should please Sannino when the transfer window opens in January.Seems like 4,4,2 will return for awhile?
